This is a research based book that is intended to educate new tinnitus sufferers about the auditory impairment in an effort to help alleviate emotional and psychological difficulties often associated (anxiety and depression are common).
I wrote the narrative in the first person, beginning by introducing myself as a tinnitus sufferer and outlining what can be taken away from the book. It then delivers medical information including a definition, and general background knowledge of tinnitus. From here I tell a story about how I could have gotten tinnitus and the personal issues I went through. The book concludes with information about tinnitus collected through contacting and interviewing other sufferers.
The design decisions revolve around the idea of an internal malfunction, which is basically what I consider tinnitus to be. Tinnitus is a subjective phenomenon, it cannot be guaranteed that any two sufferers have the same experiences. To reflect this I try to make spreads sporadic, no two are the same. I use my own writing on some expressive spreads to tie into the first person narrative and help make my body present in the work.
